Arsenal: Club could launch move for Cengiz Under

Arsenal could launch a move for AS Roma star Cengiz Under, according to Il Messaggero.

However, there is a potential snag in any potential move with the young Turk expressing his desire to stay at the Rome club ‘for a very long time’ (via Il Messaggero).

Arsenal aren’t the only European club interested in the attacker. According to the Italian publication, Bayern Munich and Tottenham Hotspur are among the clubs holding an interest in the 22-year-old.

Frankly, a move for Under would be a strange transfer from the North London club due to the array of attacking talent they acquired over the summer. Indeed, Reiss Nelson returned from his successful loan spell at Hoffenheim, meanwhile, the club also signed both Gabriel Martinelli and Nicolas Pepe in the summer transfer window.

Add to that the contribution of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on the left-wing last season and it looks like Unai Emery has all the quality he needs in wide areas. The Gabon international scored five goals while playing eight times on the left, as he connected well with close friend and teammate Alexandre Lacazette.

You can throw Henrikh Mkhitaryan into the mix as a player who can make a difference on the wing. The Armenia international enjoyed a good time on the right-wing, with his performance against Tottenham Hotspur away a standout game.

Following the game in March, 90min labelled the Armenian as the star man for Arsenal due to his energy going forward and in defending with his team.

Arsenal seemingly scouted the transfer market for a winger that would carry a threat on the ball, hence the arrival of Pepe from Lille. The Ivorian showed that threat at Anfield when he managed more dribbles than a player has managed in the Premier League so far this season (via WhoScored). Considering their interest in Wilfried Zaha too (he averaged 3.4 dribbles per league game last season), it’s clear that’s the profile of player they were keen on.

Under doesn’t display such attacking quality, as he managed a meagre 0.8 dribbles per game in Serie A last season (via WhoScored).

From options in the current squad to not having the attacking ability of a winger Arsenal seem to want, signing Under would be an ill-advised acquisition for Emery’s side. They already have two potent strikers, a player who can carry the ball and someone to help out defensively on the wing, with Ainsley Maitland-Niles also an option upon the return of Hector Bellerin from injury.
