Arsenal consider late swoop for New Zealand international

Winston ReidArsenal supporters in the Football Transfer Tavern are desperate to see some deadline day arrivals and the Daily Star reckons they could be looking to bring in a defender from West Ham United before the window closes.

Twenty-six-year-old Reid has just one year left on his current contract at Upton Park and would be available for around £3 million.

The Gunners’ defensive options are thin with Thomas Vermaelen having joined Barcelona for £15 million last month.

Wenger is keen to bring in a new centre back with 19-year-old summer signing Calum Chambers the only cover for Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker.

Reid is a firm favourite with the West Ham supporters and has been a key player since his arrival at the club in 2010.

Sam Allardyce is unlikely to sanction the sale with the Hammers short of defensive options themselves.

But the New Zealand international may well attempt to force through a move before the window shuts with the offer of Champions League football sure to prove tempting.
