The Arsenal fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern have spent the last week shouting about how good their apparent new signing Shkodran Mustafi is…but it looks like they might have spoken too soon.
Arsenal have reportedly been chasing Shkodran Mustafi for weeks, with Arsene Wenger reportedly keen to bolster his defensive options in light of somewhat of a defensive injury crisis over the summer.
A number of outlets have reported in recent weeks that the deal was closing in on completion, with the final details a mere formality for club and player.
However, those suggestions now appear false, with the BBC suggesting that any deal is far from finished.
As noted by BBC journalist David Ornstein in the tweet below, Arsenal are reportedly yet to agree a deal for Mustafi, with Valencia seemingly keen to hold out for a higher price.

Interestingly, he also adds that Arsenal may be looking at alternatives to the defender; which might suggest that any deal for Mustafi is still not necessarily expected to go through at all.
In particular, he notes that Omer Toprak, currently playing for Bayer Leverkusen, and Simon Kjaer of Fenerbache are currently being considered by Arsene Wenger and his staff.
With this saga set to continue right up until the final day, our Landlord has warned the Arsenal fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern to expect a long and busy few weeks.
Arsenal fans – we want to hear from you! Should Arsene Wenger just put his money were his mouth is and pay up for Mustafi; or would you prefer Kjaer, Toprak – or even another target?
