A stunned silence has fallen here in the Football Transfer Tavern as it has been claimed in an exclusive by the Daily Mail that two Arsenal first teamers are set to be axed this summer.
Things have not exactly been going swimmingly this season for the Gunners and Arsene Wenger has finally decided that action must be taken. What we did not expect is that captain Thomas Vermaelen and also keeper Wojciech Szczesny are on the list to depart.
Vermaelen is of course the Arsenal skipper and should he exit this summer, it would provide yet more uncertainty in the dressing room which lets face it has been crying out for strong leadership for more than a few seasons now.
For his part, Wenger is deeply concerned about the ‘mental’ state of Polish international Szczesny and claimed as much before the crunch tie with Bayern Munich. The keeper himself has taken unecessary risks this term and is not at all happy about the Frenchman’s plans to sign another keeper in the summer.
Arsenal are now facing the loss of key player Jack Wilshere for a month as the midfielder’s injury issues continue and Wenger knows he must strengthen the depth of his squad to avoid similar issues.
