Joann Gourcuff could finally make his way to the Emirates this January, after years of speculation and rumours linking him with the Gunners. Wenger is a known admirer of his fellow countryman and has previously admitted that the signing of Gourcuff, “is always tempting for a coach”.
Now could be the time for the switch with Lyon ready to part with their prize asset.
With Lyon suffering from financial issues, their president Jean-Michel Aulus is looking to generate around €30million to solve the problems, and Gourcuff could be one player to make way. If he does decide to leave then Arsenal will be quick to make an offer, but are expected to face stiff competition from former club AC Milan.
Following Arsenals disappointing defeat to Manchester United, Wenger will undoubtedly be looking at where he needs bolster his team. We know he has quality in midfield with the likes of Wilshere and Cazorla, but we saw that they are lacking a player who turns up to big occasions with vast club and international experience. Gourcuff would be an ideal solution and is simply a winner, who leads by example.
A very important and unappreciated factor that needs to be taken into consideration when signing a player is the language barrier, and how well they can communicate with their teammates. A great example of this is the current Newcastle team, who have a large majority of french speaking players which allows them to communicate better on the pitch. Perhaps Wenger will hope that the signing of Gourcuff will bring the best out of the likes of Giroud, Chamack and Gervinho. It sounds so simple but it is unbelievably effective in optimising players talents.
With Lyon desperate to sell it seems pretty clear that Gourcuff will leave in January and Arsenal would be an ideal destination for him. His wonderful technical ability would compliment an ever-improving Arsenal side and would ideally bring the best out of the players around him. It would prove a master stroke from Wenger if this were to come through and would definitely increase their chances of a champions league place and even a shot of the title.
