Arsenal could face major competition in race to land £27m-rated attacker in January – report

The Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern are eager for Arsene Wenger to bring in a few big names in January. The Gunners have had a tough season so far this term, and with the likes of Chelsea, Man Utd and Man City all spending big last summer, Arsene Wenger’s have fallen behind somewhat.

In January, then, they’ll be playing catch-up, but it doesn’t appear as though they’re going to have an easy time. According to the Evening Standard, the Gunners will be in the race for Monaco ace Thomas Lemar in January – but it won’t be an easy feat. Chelsea, it is said, may have the upper hand in the race, given that Michael Emenalo is now working for Monaco.

Emenalo, of course, left Chelsea earlier this year in search of pastures new, and whilst his time with the Blues may be at an end, their relationship could serve a further purpose in the future.

This would be a blow for Arsenal on a number of levels. Not only would this see a key rival get a major upgrade, but it would also give them a problem in their own squad too. They haven’t got much depth in the attack, particularly of a high quality, and with Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil’s contracts expiring at the end of the season, they need to prepare for the future.

Chelsea, then, could throw a spanner in their plans, though our resident Gunners are hopeful that that won’t happen.

Landlord’s Verdict

Lemar – who is rated at £27 million by Transfer Markt –  is a fantastic player, that much is clear. Arsenal weren’t successful in landing him over the summer, but a move in January would make a lot of sense for the Gunners.

He could be the perfect player to spear them into the top four, with his electric pace and technical brilliance likely to have a massive impact, particularly alongside Alexis Sanchez – if the Chilean stays.
