Arsenal: Daniele Rugani agrees terms with North London side ahead of proposed move

Juventus centre-back Daniele Rugani has agreed on a contract with Arsenal, which will see him take home €4m (roughly £3.7m), according to Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla (via Sport Witness).

The next step for the North London club is to find an agreement with Juventus, with suggestions the Turin-based club could accept a two-year loan deal.

However, Arsenal would be obliged to sign the Italy international on a permanent transfer after the loan spell for €40m (Roughly £37m).

Links with Rugani come after a less than impressive season for Arsenal’s backline last season. The Gunners conceded a mammoth 71 goals in all competitions, including 51 in the Premier League. Arsenal now face a third consecutive season in the Europa League, after finishing fifth in the Premier League and losing the Europa League final 4-1 to Chelsea.

Rugani himself has endured a tough spell since returning from his loan spell with Empoli in 2015. The Italian international only made 15 appearances in Serie A last season, however, still ranked as one of Juventus’ best centre-backs when it came to passing. The 25-year-old rated as the third-best passer out of the centre-halves, just 0.7% behind Andrea Barzagli, who was first.

For Arsenal, Rugani would be the perfect option, especially with less than a day left in the transfer market. Arsenal need to fix a stuttering defence and are running out of options. Dayot Upamecano has been linked with a move; however, Red Bull Leipzig are said to want more than £90m for the 19-year-old.

As well as the time left in the window, Rugani’s passing would improve Arsenal’s ability to pass out of defence. Calum Chambers and Sokratis Papastathopoulos, both of whom were regulars during pre-season and are expected to start versus Newcastle United, had lower average pass completion rates than Rugani.

After spending £72m, with structured payments, for Nicolas Pepe, it seems unlikely Arsenal will be able to afford to pay such a steep figure. Therefore, Rugani for less than £40m could be an ideal solution.
