Arsenal fans in the Football Transfer Tavern are looking confused after the London Evening Standard revealed Southampton midfielder Victor Wanyama has denied reports that he told Arsene Wenger he wants to join Arsenal.
The Gunners have been long term admirers of the defensive midfielder and punters were confident they would finally snap him up this summer.
But this couldn’t be further from the truth after Saints boss, Ronald Koeman, has been spending the past few weeks playing down all the rumours surrounding his stars.
But Wanyama has been seen as one of the most likely to leave St Mary’s after he was quoted as saying: “Arsenal are a great club and I’d love to play Champions League football.”
However, the highly-rated Southampton defensive midfielder used Twitter to clear the air regarding the situation.
The 23-year-old said: “I have to make it clear that I have not said what as been brought up today am professional and will never say that.
“To cut the story short I have never spoken to Wenger.”
Although he has made a clear attempt to play down the rumour, he still never committed his future to Saints.
So he could be posting tweets of this nature to keep the fans happy at the south coast until the season is over.
