Metro have a huge blow for Arsenal fans today in the Football Transfer Tavern as they note that Rafael Benitez and Napoli have agreed a £30 million deal for Gonzalo Higuain to join the Serie A side.
Arsene Wenger has been in the race for Higuain all summer long and after seeming to initially agree a £22 million fee for the forward, the arrival of Carlo Ancelotti affected the situation and Real Madrid stalled on the deal and then decided to raise the asking price for the forward.
Having then entered the race for Luis Suarez, it is quite understandable that Arsene Wenger is now focusing his time and money on pushing that deal through and this left the door open for Rafael Benitez to move for Higuain.
After initially expressing interest in taking over from Jose Mourinho at Los Blancos and failing to even make the shortlist, Benitez took up the reigns at Napoli and has clearly taken the attitude of if you can’t join them, buy them, and is looking to make Higuain his third Real Madrid signing of the summer following defender Raul Albiol and also winger and former Liverpool target Jose Callejon.
Napoli have an abundance of money to spend after selling former star man Edinson Cavani to Paris Saint-Germain and can afford to bid slightly more than Arsenal for Higuain.
Will Higuain follow Albiol and Callejon to the Stadio San Paolo? Let us know your thoughts below.
