With less than 48 hours until the end of the summer transfer window, the Arsenal fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern can’t work out if this is a good move or not.
Calum Chambers has had a rough time of it since joining Arsenal in 2014.
After momentarily displacing Nathaniel Clyne in Southampton’s first team, Chambers left for the English capital and joined Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal during the summer of 2014.
The Arsenal fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern were doubting the move back then; but nothing could have prepared them for what was to come from the English centre-half.
He started the 2014/15 campaign well, and was nominated for the Golden Boy award at the turn of the year – but since then everything has been downhill for the youngster. He has failed to solidify a spot in the Arsenal first team and has featured on a number of ‘worst buys’ lists produced by the punters here in the Tavern.
Fast forward to 2016 and Arsenal began the season with just two central defenders in Chambers and Rob Holding – neither of whom are experienced Premier League stars. What followed was a dismal 4-3 loss to Liverpool, in which the defensive pair looked poor and out of their depth.
Our landlord made it immediately clear that he didn’t think Chambers was cut out for life at the top yet – and now it appears that Arsene Wenger agrees with him.
Reported by Sky Sports yesterday, Chambers was thought to be set for a loan move to Premier League side Middlesbrough, under the managership of Aitor Karanka.
Now, fast forward 24 hours – and that move is edging ever closer.
According to Sky Sports Chief Reporter Bryan Swanson, Chambers is set for a Middlesbrough medical today prior to a season-long loan move for the young defender. See the tweet confirming the news below…

Whilst Chambers might not be ready for a spell at a top club yet, he has proven himself at a lower level with Southampton – and with Middlesbrough keen to avoid the drop this year, he could prove a vital cog in their relegation fighting machine.
In case you had forgotten how good Chambers was a couple of years ago, let us remind you…
With a good season under his belt, our landlord thinks that Chambers could come back ready to fight for a place at Arsenal…
Arsenal fans – thoughts? Does Chambers need a loan or if he better served with a prolonged Emirates stay? Middlesbrough fans – a good signing?
