Arsenal deny talk surrounding £21m target

bernard.jpgArsenal supporters in the Football Transfer Tavern had become excited with reports yesterday that Brazilian attacking midfielder Bernard was set to fly to England for a medical with the Emirates Stadium club.

However Jim Daly from Mirror Football has arrived today to dampen spirits by revealing that Arsene Wenger has denied reports he is set to sign the highly-rated 20-year-old from Atletico Minerio.

The Gunners were understood to be close to an agreement with the Brazil international winger, who featured for his country during their recent Confederations Cup success, with the £21 million valued attacker moving to North London this season.

But manager Wenger has come out to deny speculation that his club are set to reports that they are close to signing Bernard. When the French boss was quizzed following their 3-1 friendly win over Nagoya Grampus Eight on Monday he said: “That report is not true”.

A whole host of top European teams have been monitoring the progress of the youngster including Borussia Dortmund, FC Porto and Shakhtar Donetsk and he could be set for big money transfer this summer. Bernard has been in impressive from playing alongside Ronaldinho at Minerio as his side reached the final of the Copa Libertadores earning the best newcomer award in the Brazilian as his reward.

The Gunners are reported to have a £70 million war chest at their disposal this summer but so far the club have only signed free transfer Yaya Sanogo from Auxerre despite all the media speculation linking them with high profile names.
