Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern were pleased to hear they’re edging closer to a major summer signing when they entered the bar this morning, although their emotions quickly turned to surprise after hearing the player in question is not Granit Xhaka.
Fichajes state Arsenal are edging closer to sealing the signature of Borussia Dortmund’s Henrikh Mkhitaryan, with TuttoMercatoWeb adding the Gunners lead Chelsea and Juventus in the race for his services.
The Armenian international is a crucial part of Thomas Tuchel’s side but there is growing concern that the Bundesliga giants could lose crucial assets once again this summer, with Mats Hummels making it clear he wants to join Bayern Munich and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang linked with Europe’s big guns.
Mkhitaryan is about the enter the final 12 months of his contract and has been in sensational form this term, scoring 23 goals and assisting a further 30 in all competitions, all coming in just 49 appearances.
Arsenal are said to have lodged a contract offer worth £5m-a-year to the player and would have to pay around £24m to persuade Dortmund into a sale but, given his contract situation, Tuchel’s side would be best placed to accept the offer.
