Reports in The Express are the talk of the Football Transfer Tavern right now after the paper claimed Arsenal are ready to go head-to-head with Manchester United by launching an £8 million bid for Aston Villa star Ron Vlaar.
Arsene Wenger is hopeful that he can snatch Vlaar out of Louis van Gaal’s clutches with the Gunners’ bid giving the Dutch international a considerable pay rise and wages of £25,000-a-week.
To add pressure to the situation, in five weeks’ time, Vlaar will be eligible to sign a pre-contractual agreement with any suitor of his choice so he would join his chosen club next summer.
But sadly for Wenger, van Gaal is equally desperate to acquire more defensive reinforcements and the Frenchman will inevitably have to endure a tough fight to land Vlaar.
However, there is still a possibility that Vlaar could stay at Villa Park and Paul Lambert has reiterated his desire to keep him in the West Midlands for as long as possible.
But to add to his concerns, the club have confirmed that they had opened talks with their skipper a couple of weeks ago but there has worryingly been no news since.
