A big story for Arsenal fans has reached us in the Football Transfer Tavern, with Rob Draper of the Daily Mail reckoning Arsenal are lining up a club record £30 million bid for Borussia Dortmund playmaker Mario Gotze.
Wenger has been given a £70 million transfer war chest, and has identified the young German as his number one target.
Gotze has established himself as one of Europe’s most exciting talents in recent seasons, being an integral part of the Dortmund side that has won back-to-back league titles, whilst also making the semi finals of the Champions League this season.
Arsenal have come under fire in recent seasons for failure to make big money signings in the transfer market, whilst also allowing their strongest players to leave the club for Premier League rivals.
A move for Gotze would go some way to appeasing the clubs supporters who have grown disillusioned with the clubs transfer dealings over the past few years.
Wenger is also interested in bringing in Toulouse midfielder Etienne Capoue for £10 million, whilst also chasing an experienced goalkeeper – with Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina the most likely target.
Whilst big money moves represents a change in policy for the Gunners, Wenger will continue to promote youngsters to the first team, with Gedion Zelalem – a 16-year-old German with an Ethiopian father – expected to break into the first team next season.
