Metro have a claim that has Arsenal fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern looking up from their pints with interest, as they seem to be under the impression that the Gunners could well be about to make a summer move for one of the hottest talents in defensive football.
Some of our regulars take some time out from their pool game to make the joke that given their performance against Liverpool, it is not a shock that they think another defender is needed and we fully agree with them.
Our landlord notes that they may well face some stiff competition for their target however – the Gunners have set their sights on Porto star Eliaquim Mangala, and are considering a move at the end of the season.
They will not only have to fight off competition from at least Chelsea and both Manchester sides, but they will also have to persuade the player to leave Porto – and have to pay £35 million to get that done.
Not exactly small change, and given how much Arsene Wenger hates spending big money on players, we think it would take at least one more hammering to convince him to make that move – luckily for him, they still have to play Bayern Munich , so it could well happen!
Will Wenger join the race for Mangala? Let us know your thoughts below.
