The Mail Online contains surprising news for us here in the Football Transfer Tavern today as they claim Arsenal could swoop for Iker Casillas.
Real Madrid skipper Casillas has been out of the starting eleven at the Bernabeu since breaking his hand in the Copa del Rey tie against Valencia last term and saw Diego Lopez come in and produce a sensational series of displays to keep him out of the side.
Of course this is not the whole story, and the relationship between former manager Jose Mourinho and Casillas was a major factor in keeping the Los Blancos legend out of the starting line up.
Cue the arrival of Carlo Ancelotti and the assumption that Casillas would be starting once again. Many of the press and indeed Iker himself showed shock at the fact Lopez was starting and now Arsene Wenger is willing to capitalise on the situation.
Wenger wants to abate the growing unrest at the club, and given the lack of signings and the slender victory over Real Betis on the opening day of the season, capturing a player like Casillas would go a long way in doing this.
Arsenal are willing to pay around £8 million for the player, yet Real Madrid are thought to be determined to hold out for at least double that, if they entertain the notion of selling the player at all.
As one of our punters quips, it is more likely that we will see Carlo Ancelotti leave before Casillas, and yet another manager installed after falling victim to player power at the Bernabeu.
Surely another of the tall tales witnessed in the tavern this summer? Is there any legs in this rumour at all? Let us know your thoughts below.
