Arsenal eye surprise move for England Under-21 international

John StonesIt’s set to be a massive weekend in the Football Transfer Tavern with significant matches in the Premier League and in the FA Cup semi-finals.

Ahead of their short trip to Wembley tomorrow, Gunners supporters have taken residence in the tavern to find out the latest transfer speculation as they try to distract themselves from the test in order against Wigan Athletic.

Today’s copy of Metro claims that Arsene Wenger has targeted a move for young Everton defender John Stones in the summer.

Stones, who only joined the Toffees from Barnsley in January 2013, has been excellent since making his debut for Roberto Martinez’s side and recent performances suggest that the Goodison Park club have a real talent on their hands.

Wenger was able to witness the full impact of Stones first-hand, who can play in either central defender or at right back, as he watched his side defeated in hugely impressive style by the in-form Toffees last Sunday.

The Gunners certainly need to strengthen their backline this summer after that display with Nacho Monreal and Thomas Vermalean woeful in defence while French defender Bacary Sagna is expected to depart at the end of the campaign.

Today’s reports suggest that Stones could be lined up as a long-term replacement for Sagna, although we have to admit that we have no idea why Everton would sell the England Under-21 international at this stage of his career especially with the prospect of defeating Arsenal to that final Champions League place.
