Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern have been crying out for defensive alterations this season, as the arrival of Petr Cech has not quite stopped the rot in north London, and it seems Arsene Wenger has a trick up his sleeve.
The Daily Mirror suggests Wenger will look towards youth to rebuild his struggling defence, as he considers swoops for Leicester City’s Ben Chilwell, Fulham’s Ryan Sessegnon and Atletico Madrid’s Lucas Hernandez.
Arsenal have looked fragile at the back all season and lack squad depth in particular areas, with no back-up on the right for Hector Bellerin and Kieran Gibbs failing to impress on the left, whilst central trio Per Mertesacker, Laurent Koscielny and Gabriel Paulista have all struggled for form and fitness at times this term.
Considering that Koscielny, Mertesacker and Monreal are the wrong side of 30, it makes sense for Arsenal to pursue the signatures of three exciting defensive prospects and, if secured, it could cement the Gunners back-line for years to come.
Chilwell is the most recognisable name of the trio but is exactly the least experienced, with 15-year-old Sessegnon impressing for Fulham whilst Hernandez, a centre-back, has appeared ten times for Diego Simeone’s Atletico.
