Metro have news for Arsenal fans in the Football Transfer Tavern as the Gunners may be best informed to abandon attempts to sign Swansea City duo Michu and Ashley Williams as deadline day edges ever closer.
The Gunners manager has long been reportedly keen on the duo, and has seen his side fail to land a host of players this summer.
As one of our punters quips, had Wenger focused his attentions on the pair earlier in the summer, he could well now be watching them in the red of Arsenal.
As it stands however, the window closes on Monday and neither player will be allowed to leave the Swans.
After realising that none of the players he had identified as summer targets were willing to make a move to North London, plus seeing rivals Tottenham spend big, the Frenchman is now considering turning to the two players he had been linked with before the window even opened.
Michu was of course a revelation last season and has lost none of his presence in front of goal. Add to this the defensive solidity of Williams – something Wenger desperately needs at the Emirates Stadium – and you can see why he would be interested in the duo.
Despite having £70 million to spend, Wenger has thus far failed to shell out on anyone, and would have to break the bank to land either of Michael Laudrup’s players, after Swansea noted they would fight ‘tooth and nail’ to keep hold of their key men.
Just who will Wenger be able to tempt to the Emirates Stadium before the deadline? Let us know your thoughts below.
