Arsenal failed in spectacular move for £80m man last summer

Another target lost for the Arsenal fans in the Football Transfer Tavern…

Over the summer, only one name was ever on lips of the Arsenal fans in the Tavern – Gonzalo Higuain.

The lethal Argentine forward was long touted for a move to the Premier League, and the Gunners were believed to be the frontrunners for his signature all summer.

The Arsenal fans in the Tavern were sure that the deal was going to be done – but it was not to be.

Now though, it has been revealed just how close the Gunners were to making the deal a reality.

Speaking to Standard Sport, Napoli chairman Aurelio De Laurentiis said: “We received a request from Arsenal [and] from Atletico Madrid – but they didn’t put enough money on the table.”

He added: ““We were not ready to sell him”

Wow! Everyone in the Tavern had an idea that Arsenal were interested – but you never know what to believe in the press.

It would appear that the Gunners were genuinely interested enough in Higuain to warrant an approach.

The Arsenal fans think that the Gunners could have won the title with him leading the line…

Whilst our landlord doesn’t think his signing would have made an impact quite that large – he thinks it would have been a serious statement of intent from Arsene Wenger.
