Arsenal won their second Premier League game of the season after beating Cardiff 3-2 last weekend in what was a very entertaining encounter at the Cardiff City Stadium.
Cardiff came from behind twice, but it was not enough after Alexandre Lacazette netted the winner in the 81st minute with an exquisite finish into the top corner.
Lacazette, who was also involved in Arsenal’s second goal when he set up Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, had a brilliant game.
However, as well as Lacazette, Arsenal supporters have been praising Shkodran Mustafi, too.
Mustafi scored the Gunners’ opening goal and his overall performance on the day was good with Arsenal fans taking to Twitter to talk up the German’s display.
Even though Arsenal did concede two goals, £22.5m-rated (via Transfermarkt) Mustafi definitely did have one of his better games.
That being said, there are still many question marks surrounding Mustafi’s quality as a defender, and it is hard to see how Arsenal can compete for a Champions League qualification spot let alone the Premier League title with the Germany international as a starting centre-back.
Mustafi is very slow — something that is being exposed further with Unai Emery trying to play such a high line — while he can also be very reckless with his tackling and often has lapses in concentration.
All in all, alongside new signing Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Mustafi and Arsenal as a whole look unconvincing in defence, as they have shown thus far after conceding two goals in games versus Manchester City, Chelsea and most recently Cardiff.
Of course, it is still early into Emery’s tenure while the Gunners’ best central defender Laurent Koscielny remains sidelined following the Achilles tendon injury he picked up against Atletico Madrid towards the end of last season.
Ultimately, though, Arsenal have long looked vulnerable at the back, and Mustafi is a large reason as to why.
