Mesut Ozil scored his first goal since December yesterday when he struck just minutes after Granit Xhaka’s sublime free-kick had given his side the lead. It was a big day for Ozil, he made his St James Park debut and his 200th Arsenal appearance and marked both with a goal.

The German has often come in for criticism for his performances and at times this season having Ozil on the pitch has been like playing with ten men. However, he silenced those who slate him with his goal as he helped put Newcastle to the sword to make it three straight wins for Unai Emery after what was a tough start with back-to-back losses against Manchester City and Chelsea.
It will be a very long season for Ozil and co at The Emirates. The club are competing in the Europa League for a second consecutive season and if they can continue Unai Emery’s theme of success in the competition they’ll need big performances from their best players and Mesut Ozil is certainly one of those. When the going gets tough at the club it will be up to Ozil to step up and drag his side through games, if he can keep up his goalscoring and matchwinning form, though, that shouldn’t be a problem.
