During his five year spell with Arsenal, Thomas Vermaelen had a mixed spell. The Belgian defender signed from Ajax in 2009 before leaving, strangely, for Barcelona in 2014. His time at the club was riddled with injuries and whilst there were some big moments for the 33-year-old, a lot of Arsenal fans are struggling to remember them.

Yesterday was the Barcelona man’s birthday and Arsenal fans account, AFTV tweeted out asking their followers what their favourite Thomas Vermaelen moment was. However, a lot of fans were far from complimentary with how they fired back their responses, especially considering that the Belgian defender was the club captain at The Emirates for a time and lived and breathed Arsenal, really understanding the supporters.
The 33-year-old racked up 150 appearances for Arsenal and even scored a tidy return of 15 goals, a strong total for a central defender. Whilst a lot of defenders would still be going strong into their mid-thirties, Vermaelen’s career looks to be as good as over considering the injury issues he’s had over the years and now, as he finds himself well down the pecking order at The Nou Camp, we could well see the former Arsenal skipper hang up his boots soon.

The Gunners all seemed to enjoy it when Vermaelen left and have been quite harsh in their assessment of his time at The Emirates.
