Sometimes, it just takes a couple of incredible displays where one player steps up in the big games before they’re truly appreciated, and for the Gunners, Bernd Leno has managed just that. The German was sublime at Wembley last weekend and then stepped up again yesterday at The Emirates during his side’s 2-0 win over Manchester United.

Unai Emery’s German shot-stopper showed just what he’s all about yesterday. His incredible athleticism helped him to keep Manchester United at bay, and his personal duel with Romelu Lukaku was particularly impressive as he repeatedly stopped the Belgian on his way to recording his 5th clean sheet of the season. The win helped take the Gunners’ up to 4th and the battle for the top four is hotting up.
At this rate, the Gunners will be backing themselves to finish 3rd, ahead of both Manchester United and both of their London rivals Chelsea and Tottenham. However, they wouldn’t be in a position to do that if they Leno hadn’t been pulled off his heroics inbetween the sticks. Two weekends in a row now the Gunners have been left relying on the German and twice he’s come up trumps. Now, though, Emery’s side have a favourable run-in and will back themselves to keep the pressure on their rivals.
You can read the Gunners’ verdict on Leno here:
Majestic saves ; a win and a ckean sheet. Denying Lukaku twice and rushing to cut ball out. German shot stopper at his best.
