Arsenal: Gunners announce Carl Jenkinson sale

Arsenal have announced the sale of Carl Jenkinson to Championship side Nottingham Forest.

Premiership Picks

The club confirmed on their official website that the right-back, who joined the Gunners in 2011, had left the club permanently for Forest after spending nine years at the north London side.

Goal reported further by saying Arsenal sold the 27-year-old defender for £2m, meaning the Gunners have made close to £17m this summer on clearing out defenders alone following the sales of Laurent Koscielny (per BBC Sport) and Krystian Bielik (per Sky Sports News).

Although the departure of Jenkinson was something that seemed to be inevitable based on his 70 appearances in nine years for the Gunners (per Transfermarkt), Arsenal have seemingly left themselves short in the right-back position heading into the new season.

With Hector Bellerin reportedly out until September according to the Guardian and Ainsley Maitland-Niles still acting as a makeshift right-back in pre-season, Unai Emery will be heading into the new season this weekend with no fully fit natural right-back following the departure of Jenkinson.

Although Maitland-Niles won praise last season from former Arsenal player Jeremie Aliadiere (per 888 Sport) for making the step-up into the first-team, having no fully fit, natural right-backs could cause problems for the Gunners, and prematurely selling Jenkinson might add to this issue.

Jenkinson’s goodbye message on Instagram was met with praise by both Gary Lineker and Ian Wright on social media, yet Arsenal might have seemingly caused a problem in letting him leave with no natural right-back in the squad fit.

Whilst a move to Forest on paper seems like a smart move for the defender after years of hardly playing for the Gunners, Emery now heads into the new season with only Maitland-Niles capable of playing at right-back, and although Bellerin will be back much earlier than anticipated, these few opening weeks are crucial for Arsenal, and having squad depth in all positions is vital.
