The Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping for the best from their side’s Europa League campaign. It’s not a competition of primary focus, but a win could lead to huge rewards for the Gunners, and that could have massive implications for Arsene Wenger’s men. A good performance against FC Köln on Thursday, then, is absolutely vital.
Fortunately for the Gunners, they’ve received some good news as the clash looms. As per the Evening Standard, striker Olivier Giroud has returned to training ahead of the game, giving Arsene Wenger another option in the attack as he undoubtedly looks to rotate his squad.
Giroud has rarely started this term, but given how many games Alexandre Lacazette has played lately, the French veteran is a decent candidate to feature from the first whistle. His goalscoring record is impressive, and so Wenger will put a lot of faith in him to deliver the goods if he is selected.
Arsenal’s clash with FC Köln is a huge game in the context of their campaign, given that a draw will ensure that they progress to the next round of the competition in first place. That, as a result, will give them a very favourable draw as they look to go even further in the Europa League.
Though clearly a second-rate competition, if the Gunners are able to secure the trophy then that will give them entry in the Champions League next season – which is something that they may fail to achieve through conventional means.
Arsenal can’t be too quick to rush Giroud back, but he looks more than ready to play.
A good performance will be needed as he looks to displace Alexandre Lacazette at the head of the attack going forward.
