Arsenal have ‘no plans’ to seek fresh terms with £110,000-per-week attacker – report

The Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern were so excited when Theo Walcott moved to the club in 2006…

Touted by many in the pub as the future of English football, the electric winger’s potential was incredible, hence why the Gunners looked to bring him in despite his youth.

However, his career path has taken a pretty disappointing route, and whilst he has been a solid option for the Gunners for quite some time, he hasn’t hit the heights that were expected of him as a teenager.

Typically a rotational option under Wenger these days, he certainly isn’t a fan favourite in the Transfer Tavern, and according to the Express, Wenger doesn’t seem to be much of a fan either.

The Express is reporting that Arsenal have ‘no plans’ to extend Walcott’s current £110,000-per-week contract – which expires in 2019 – and so a sale could be forthcoming. Southampton are mentioned by name as a potential destination, with the club said to be willing to pay up to £15 million for his signature.

A return to Southampton would mark a complete 180 from Walcott, with the Saints – of course – the club that he developed through as a youngster.

Walcott has found his game time at the Emirates increasingly hard to come by lately, and in truth, he’s never really been a player that Wenger has relied on consistently. At times, his play can be frustrating, with his fantastic dribbling and running often marred by a lack of technical ability.

That said, Southampton would be able to offer him regular football, and Mauricio Pelligrino has got his side playing well, and so a move would make sense in that regard. At 28-years-old, Walcott still has years left at the top, and it’s up to him to decide what his next step is.

Landlord’s Verdict

With Arsenal and, seemingly, Theo Walcott both keen to call time on this arrangement, a transfer is looking increasingly likely.

He’s in the prime of his career right now, and he thus he needs to be playing every week. He’d certainly be able to do that at Southampton.

His pace terrifies defenders, and he’d offer a massive threat down the flanks for the Saints.

This has all the makings of a future deal.
