Arsenal have made a losing start to the Premier League season with consecutive defeats under new manager Unai Emery.

The Gunners, despite putting in a decent effort in the transfer market, still look to have the same old problems in their squad, especially defensively, and it could well be a long old season for the Londoners if things do not pick up soon.

However, an improved attacking performance at least against Chelsea this weekend gave some cause for optimism, and we at the Transfer Tavern think that Arsenal are only a few players off being much improved.

One position that obviously needs some experience adding to is in the middle of the park, and we think that recently released Italian midfielder Claudio Marchisio would be a superb signing.

The Juventus stalwart has this week seen his contract cancelled by the Turin club, and at only 32, there is still plenty left in the tank should the Gunners fancy adding some quality and experience to their squad.

Marchisio has long been a regular for the Italian giants, and would bring an element of class, experience, and fight to an Arsenal midfield which has looked lightweight ever since the days of Vieira and Petit.

For a free transfer, Marchisio is arguably the best option available at the moment, and he would certainly offer Unai Emery something on either a short term or rolling contract type of deal.

Arsenal fans, what do you think? Would you take Marchisio? Let us know in the comments!
