Arsenal haven’t given up on landing Ligue 1 star

Clement Grenier

The Football Transfer Tavern is packed ahead of the Champions League action tonight with Manchester United and City both in action.

Among the supporters gathered around the TV is journalist Ben Jefferson from The Express who is overheard speaking about a possible transfer target for Premier League leaders Arsenal.

Jefferson is explaining that the Gunners have not given up hope of signing Lyon midfielder Clement Grenier once the transfer window reopens in the New Year.

French reports suggest that Arsene Wenger, who made a £6 million offer over the summer, is still keeping tabs on the 22-year-old with a view to possible improved bid for his compatriot in the winter window.

Grenier rejected all advances fr0m the Emirates Stadium in favour of continuing his development at the Ligue 1 club but his outstanding personal performances for Lyon could see Wenger moving again.

The Stade Gerland-based side are struggling to keep pace with big spending rivals Paris Saint-Germain and Monaco which has increased speculation they could be forced to sell Grenier in the near future.

The player himself recently admitted that although he has a contract until 2016, he would considering leave the club if the situation failed to improve.

“I have a contract which now runs until 2016. We’ll see what happens here in a year. Anyway, I told the President that whatever happens, I will not leave my club for free,” Grenier said.

Arsenal have started the new season in stunning form collecting 27 points from their last possible 30 and Wenger will be plotting to add to his current squad in January with a move to bolster his midfielder ranks in the pipeline. Although only a whisper, remember you heard it here first if Grenier does indeed become a Gunner soon!

Is Grenier the player that Arsenal need this January? Could he help a title push? Let us know your thoughts below.
