The Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern are getting very excited by their side’s January transfer business. The Gunners, who have struggled to bring in many big names in recent years, look set to have a very exciting end to the month, with a couple of deals being mooted.
Fortunately for the Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern, though, their plans apparently extend beyond the closure of the January transfer window.
According to the Evening Standard, deals for Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang are still in the offing, with Arsene Wenger keen to add more quality to his attack. However, significantly, Arsenal’s January plans are also intended to have an impact on Mesut Ozil. The Evening Standard reports that there is a hope that Arsenal’s moves to sign both Mkhitaryan and Aubameyang – both of whom are amongst Europe’s best – will convince Ozil that Arsenal are an exciting club to play for, and subsequently they are hoping that he will sign a new deal as a result.
It’s quite a simple strategy from Arsenal. Their feeling is that if they prove their ambition to Ozil, then he will be encouraged to stay, and in truth – that makes sense.
The German has impressed for the Gunners this term, and his importance to the team is only growing. As such, the prospect of losing him is – arguably – even worse than that of Sanchez’s departure. Obviously, Arsenal aren’t only looking to invest purely in an effort to keep Ozil, but it’s a very interesting byproduct of their desire to improve the squad.
Ozil’s a player that has won trophies everywhere he has been, and Arsenal haven’t been able to do that in recent years. That said, bringing in new faces will certainly help to give them the best chance of doing that over the coming years – and so Ozil could well be tempted to sign on.
In stark contrast to Sanchez, Ozil’s future post-Arsenal hasn’t been a particularly heated discussion point – and so there certainly seems to be a chance that he will remain at the club.
He seems pretty happy on the surface, and so these new signings could be the final icing on the cake for him.
It’s certainly going to be an interesting few weeks for the Gunners.
