According to The Mirror, Arsenal boss Wenger has asked to be kept informed regarding the availability of Borussia Dortmund centre back Mats Hummels.
The North London club are now reportedly ready to challenge Manchester United for the signature of the German World Cup winner.
It has been Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal that has been doing all the courting when it comes to bringing the 25-year-old defender to the Premier League.
And despite Jurgen Klopp’s side insisting that he is going nowhere, there is still the belief from many that the player could turn his back on Dortmund if a £30 million bid comes in.
It now seems that the Red Devils will not have it all their own way if Hummels does become available as the Gunners look to bring in a defender.
Wenger, like van Gaal, has serious money to spend this summer as he looks to firm up his defence.
He has already signed Calum Chambers and Mathieu Debuchy this summer but the Frenchman still needs a centre back to replace Thomas Vermaelen.
The Belgian international defender looks set to leave this summer with a potential move to Old Trafford reported to be close.
The Gunners can offer Champions League football next season, unlike Manchester United and that could see them secure one of Bundesliga’s best.
