The Daily Star has informed Arsenal fans in the Football Transfer Tavern that their boss is now eyeing up a January move for Athletic Bilbao’s young defender Aymeric Laporte after Mats Hummels committed his future to Borussia Dortmund.
Arsene Wenger is looking to land the 20-year-old as a belated replacement for Thomas Vermaelen who left the Emirates Stadium this past summer for £15 million.
The French tactician has had to put up with criticism after failing to replace their former captain in the recent transfer window and the lack of a replacement has left the Gunners’ defensive ranks looking particular thin this term.
Nacho Monreal has had to perform out of position at centre back with the Spaniard receiving widepsread criticism from our resident Gunners contingent.
Wenger is not the only manager in the Premier League who is seeking defensive reinforcements in January however with Louis van Gaal expected to provide stiff competition for the Gunners as they pursue Laporte.
The young French Under-21 international defender has impressively already made 59 league appearances for the La Liga outfit.
Punters feel this is the right player for Arsenal as they would not want pay to big money for a defender who may demand first team football right away.
If Hummels was signed for example, that would then break the strong partnership that has been forged between Per Mertesacker and Lauren Koscielny despite the former player looking a shadow of his self last season.
This means a young defender like Laporte would be happy to play a bit-part role after joining in January, then going on to become a first choice selection in future seasons.
