Arsenal are reportedly planning to make an audacious bid to sign playmaker Rafael Van Der Vaart from bitter rivals Tottenham Hotspur according to French media LesTransferts.com
The Dutchman has only been at White Hart Lane for one year since his £8 million move from Real Madrid in 2010, but Arsenal believe they can poach the talented playmaker, with the offer of Champions League football.
Van Der Vaart has apparently become a little frustrated with life at Tottenham in recent months, and the Dutch international recently voiced his dissaproval publicly last month, at being omitted from the team’s Europa League 25-man squad.
Van Der Vaart’s relationship with manager Harry Redknapp appears to have become strained and the Spurs boss may be willing to cash in on the troublesome midfielder.
Van Der Vaart instantly became a fans’ favourite at White Hart Lane after a terrific start to his Spurs career at the start of last season, but he has started this season in a completely different manner. Despite scoring his first goal of the season at Wigan on Saturday, he has displayed acts of petulance at being substituted in a few of the earlier games and some may say he has become a bit of a disruption at the club.
It is no secret that Arsenal are looking for midfield reinforcements after selling Samir Nasri and Cesc Fabregas in the summer, but Arsene Wenger feels he now must definitely enter the transfer market in January, after learning that last season’s revelation Jack Wilshere, will be out for up to five months after undergoing ankle surgery.
Wenger has now reportedly identified Van Der Vaart as the man to bolster his thin midfield, but according to The Daily Mirror, AC Milan are also interested in former Ajax, Hamburg and Real Madrid man and this may force Tottenham to increase their asking price closer to €24 million.
According to The Mirror however, AC Milan are only willing to bid around £12 million in January, and this may be an offer Spurs may feel they have to accept in order to prevent a move to rivals Arsenal.
After the signing of Emmanuel Adebayor, Harry Redknapp has reverted to a 4-4-2 formation this season, pairing the Togolese striker with Jermain Defoe. That has meant that Van Der Vaart hasn’t been able to occupy his favoured position behind a striker and this is another reason why Redknapp may let the player move on.
Another discovery that may anger Redknapp, is a recent text message that Ajax midfielder Theo Janssen revealed he had received from Van Der Vaart. In the message the Dutchman appears to aim a jibe at Redknapp.
“I was taken off in the Champions League against Olympique Lyon and I was really angry. The next moment I received a text message from Rafael, who said he was wondering if I happened to have the same contract as he has at Spurs.”
“I asked him what kind of contract that was? He answered: ‘One which states that you are only allowed to play 70 minutes in each match.”
Rafael Van Der Vaart’s days at Spurs appear to be numbered, but whether Spurs decide to cash in on him in January or keep him until the summer remains to be seen.
