Unia Emery’s opening to life as Arsenal manager has been characterised by slick attacking football and positive results to match, but that has not prevented him from expressing interest in one of Europe’s most exciting young attackers according to reports in Spain.
Indeed, Emery has found a winning formula which has enabled the likes of Alexandre Lacazette, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Mesut Ozil and Henrikh Mkhitaryan to thrive this season, but the new manager is refusing to rest on his laurels.
According to a recent report from Spanish media outlet Sport, Arsenal have expressed an interest in signing Malcom from Barcelona, although they face competition from London rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Inter Milan.
The report claims that Malcom’s slow start to life in Catalonia has made him something of an ostracised figure and his limited opportunity has evoked interest from three of Europe’s biggest clubs.
After performing a last minute u-turn to snub Roma in favour of a move for Barcelona, it seemed that Malcom (valued at £40.5 million by Transfermarkt) was destined for the very top, but so far reality has hardly mirrored the pre-season expectation.
The Brazilian speedster has just 25 minutes of competitive action under his belt so far this season, and he was left out of Ernesto Valverde’s squad for Barcelona’s two most recent fixtures against Valencia and Athletic Bilbao.
But Malcom’s electric form for Bordeaux last season in which he scored 12 goals and provided 8 assists in all-competitions is enough to suggest that he is merely struggling to break into a star-studded squad.
At 21-years-old Malcom is clearly one of the brightest young talents in world football, and if Emery is able to lure him to the Emirates Stadium there is no doubt it would represent a huge coup for the club.
