Arsenal must make additions to their squad in the summer if they are to improve on this season’s efforts. That is pretty much a given.
Unai Emery will have had a year with his current squad and should have a clearer image in his head about what is needed at the Emirates Stadium to turn his side into one competing for the Premier League.
And, it appears he could be about to turn to one player who has been putting in some impressive performances in the top-flight.
What’s the News?
According to ESPN sources, Arsenal are interested in rivalling Everton for Andre Gomes in the summer.
The Barcelona loanee is impressing at Goodison Park, however, the Gunners are yet to make any official contact between the La Liga side and the Gunners.
Emery and Raul Sanllehi are both admirers of the midfielder and could look to try and convince him to join them at the Emirates Stadium.
Gomes has been nothing but impressive for Everton this season during his loan spell and seems to have taken to life in the Premier League rather well after a disappointing time at Barcelona.
It would not be a surprise to hear that the Toffees want to turn his stay at Goodison Park into a permanent one, however, Arsenal could look to hijack any possible move and may be able to use a few factors to their advantage.
Firstly, the Gunners will be in European competition next season, whether it be the Champions League or Europa League, and the Portugal international might be keen on playing in those tournaments once again. He will not be able to do that with Everton for at least another season.
He has also worked with Sanllehi before as he was the man to bring Gomes to Barcelona in the first place and could look to use their relationship as a means of convincing him that his future is in north London and not in Merseyside.
The 26-year-old would be able to slot straight into the midfield for the Gunners, especially with Aaron Ramsey departing in the summer and could give them a more solid base in the middle of the park, although there would be a risk that Emery loses some of the creative flow from his side.
It could be argued that Gomes is not the type of player Arsenal currently need at this moment in time, nonetheless, he could still be an excellent addition.
