Arsenal will be desperate to get the better of BATE Borisov in the return leg of their Europa League round of 32 tie, as they were beaten 1-0 in Belarus.
The Gunners simply can’t afford to be knocked out of Europe as it’s arguably their biggest chance of securing a Champions League place, with Manchester United looking strong in the Premier League.
But, it looks as if Unai Emery has his sights on a possible swoop for a defender, as according to The Sun, Arsenal are shock contenders to sign Ajax’s Matthijs De Ligt.
It’s believed that De Ligt has worked with the likes of Dennis Bergkamp and Marc Overmars before and is a huge admirer of the Londoners.
Indeed, a potential move for De Ligt looks a long way off at this moment in time as Emery would need to get rid of Mesut Ozil to wipe out his hefty wage bill, while qualifying for the Champions League.
However, the Gunners will face heavy competition to secure his services as the likes of Liverpool, Manchester City, Barcelona and Juventus are all eyeing the teenager.
Matthijs De Ligt, who is valued at £58.5 million (by Transfermarkt), has established himself as arguably one of the hottest prospects in world football, with a number of Europe’s elite chasing his signature.
Arsenal could definitely do with bringing in a central defenders as they’ve been vulnerable at times at the back, with De Ligt being arguably the best option on the market at this moment in time.
