Arsenal have been linked with a some of Europe’s hottest prospects, now it seems they have their eye on Basel playmaker, Xherdan Shaqiri . The midfielder has put in himself in the shop window with some impressive performances for club and country; namely in a friendly against England, as well as Champions League games with Manchester United.
Shaqiri was also an instrumental player in Basel’s back-to-back title wins and their progression to the knock-out stages of this season’s Champions League.
Arsene Wenger has also kept tabs on Borussia Dortmund’s Mario Gotze, Borussia Monchengladbach’s Marco Reus and Eden Hazard of Lille.
But these starlets already play in major European leagues so their price tag is likely to be in excess of £20m, much higher than the Albanian-born Swiss international who could be snapped up for a little as €12m.
Another factor in whether Wenger will get his man is the attention he has already received from some of the top European sides.
Real Madrid, AC Milan and Manchester United have all been monitoring Shaqiri’s situation and all these teams have deeper pockets then Arsenal.
The success of Wenger’s move may depend on whether he can off-load some of his under-performing and unhappy players, such as Marouane Chamakh, Andrei Arshavin, Nicklas Bendtner and Carlos Vela to free up funds for fees and wages.
