The Arsenal fans in the Football Transfer Tavern think that his transfer valuation is way off the mark…
Goalkeeping dilemmas plagued Arsenal for years prior to the capture of Petr Cech, with the likes of David Ospina and Wojciech Szczesny a far cry from the standard at which Arsenal had come to expect in years gone by.
The signing of Cech alleviated those concerns, with the ex-Chelsea shot-stopper coming in and immediately continuing the fine form that had seen him control the goal for close to a decade at Chelsea.
However, there is one very real concern with Cech – he is, at present, 34-years-old, and whilst his form has been stellar this season – he simply cannot play on forever.
Cech is undoubtedly coming into the final years of his career, and our landlord thinks that Arsenal seriously need to prepare for his eventual departure.
It would appear that Arsene Wenger agrees – but it seems that one major obstacle stands between him and his primary target.
According to Goal, Arsenal are reportedly keen on Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak – but are being deterred by the €100 million (£85 million) price tag that Madrid will demand as per his release clause.
Interestingly, they also note that Arsenal could move for him at a lower price, but given Atletico’s demands – any deal, at present, looks unlikely.
This has come as a blow to the Arsenal fans in the Tavern, many of whom have been seriously impressed with Oblak as of late. Since joining in 2014, he has made a hefty 58 league appearances for the La Liga giants – and given that he is just 23-years-old, he would almost certainly represent the long-term goalkeeping solution that Wenger craves.
Our landlord thinks that whilst a deal is unlikely, Wenger should definitely be keeping tabs on Oblak.
