The Arsenal fans have been feeling miserable in the Transfer Tavern this week after their side suffered a 2-1 defeat against Newcastle United at St James’ Park, but recent reports emerging this week have given them reason to be optimistic about the future.
Arsene Wenger’s side have been cut well adrift of the top-four in recent weeks following a series of poor results in the Premier League. Arsenal’s failure to keep pace with the top-four this season has been an ominous sign for the Gunners faithful propping up our bar in the Transfer Tavern who believe that the signing of new talent this summer will be essential to their ambitions for the new season.
The club will need to strengthen across the field to become competitive at the summit of the Premier League table once again next season, particularly in defensive positions where they have been lacking strength in depth in recent years. With that in mind, it’s no surprise that Arsenal could be interested in signing Leicester City’s Harry Maguire this summer according to The Daily Star.
The report claims that a handful of sides are interested, and Arsenal are said to be huge fans of him, but it remains to be seen as to whether the Gunners will meet Leicester’s valuation of £25 million.
Maguire (valued at £13.5 million by Transfermarkt) has been in excellent form for the Foxes since he made the switch to Leicester from Hull City last summer and, his performances earned him his first England cap back in October 2017.
His arrival would be a huge boost to everyone at the club, aside from Calum Chambers who is likely to become surplus to requirements with the added competition for places.
Chambers has taken something of a back seat role at Arsenal this season due to a combination of injuries and Wenger’s preference to select the likes of Shkodran Mustafi and Laurent Koscielny at centre-back, whilst Hector Bellerin has been an ever-present at right-back until very recently.
The 23-year-old’s lack of opportunity to shine in the first-team will certainly be frustrating for him at this stage in his career and, the arrival of Maguire is only likely to intensify that frustration.
Although Arsenal will probably be reluctant to sell Chambers in the summer, they may be forced to allow him to embark on a new challenge following Maguire’s potential arrival. Sure, Leicester will likely be demanding more than his market value, but Maguire would be worth every penny.
