The Arsenal supporters in the Transfer Tavern are intrigued by recent reports which link their club with a move for Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema this summer.
Arsene Wenger was busy in the January transfer window with his efforts to improve the breadth of his attacking options as he welcomed both Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to the club and waved goodbye to Alexis Sanchez and Olivier Giroud. The change in personnel has not enabled the club to mount a challenge for the top-four this season, but there are signs to suggest that Mkhitaryan and Aubameyang will be extremely successful at the club.
However, it seems that Wenger is not content with the depth of his attacking players just yet, as reports emerging from Spanish media outlet Diario Gol claim that Arsenal will make a bid to sign Karim Benzema this summer for 40 million euros, although Real Madrid value him closer to 80 million euros.
Considering Benzema’s immense talent and phenomenal record in European football, a move which saw him swap Madrid for North London would certainly be a productive one for the club, unless it resulted in the departure of Alexandre Lacazette.
Lacazette only arrived at the Emirates at the beginning of the season, and so far he has divided opinion amongst the Gunners faithful propping up our bar. It’s clear from his performances that he has plenty of ability, but he hasn’t managed to prove that on a regular basis thus far.
But the French international should be forgiven for his lack of consistency on the basis that it’s his first season in the English top-flight, so Arsenal must avoid making a rash decision to replace him this summer before he has had an adequate level of time to prove himself.
The arrival of Benzema (valued at £45 million by Transfermarkt) would leave Wenger with three strikers of sheer quality, which represents one too many in a team which normally operates with a lone striker.
Given that Aubamyeang only moved to the club in January, there’s no doubt that Lacazette would be forced to depart in search of first-team football following Benzema’s arrival, and the club must hold this in deep consideration before making an audacious bid to land the Los Blancos star this summer.
