It’s a rumour that won’t go seem to go away in the Football Transfer Tavern.
Once again Mirror Football report that Arsenal are plotting a £22 million move for Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema in January.
The Gunners have been strongly linked with the French international as Arsene Wenger attempts to add a top quality striker to his ranks in the upcoming winter window after he reportedly tried to sign the forward during the summer.
His former Madrid team-mate Mesut Ozil, who joined Arsenal in a club-record £42.5 million signing in the summer, has now offered a ringing endorsement to Wenger to move again for Benzema.
That could see the French boss step up the chase for his compatriot, who has scored eight times this season for Madrid.
The Gunners are clear at the top of the Premier League but there is a worry in the tavern that their title challenge could be derailed with an injury to star marksman Olivier Giroud with just Nicklas Bendtner in reserve.
As one punter quips, securing Benzema in January could be enough to ensure the Premier League title returns to North London.
However the transfer could be entirely dependent on Liverpool deciding to sell Luis Suarez as Madrid eye up the Uruguayan international in a £50 million deal.
Without first landing a first class replacement. it seems rather unlikely that the Bernabeu outfit would let the 25-year-old leave in the near future.
Would signing Benzema be the catalyst that brings the first major trophy to the Emirates Stadium? Let us know your thoughts below.
