Metro have a sensational claim today in the Football Transfer Tavern as they think that Arsenal could well be set to make a surprise move for England international Gareth Barry.
The club have been linked to the Manchester City midfielder who has one year left on his contract at the Etihad Stadium.
It is not the first time that Barry has been linked with a move away from City and given that Tottenham and Andre Villas-Boas are also thought to be keen on making a move for the 32-year-old with Scott Parker moving on this summer, it seems not only will Arsenal face a fight to land him, but City will have to offer an improved contract to keep him
The former Aston Villa man was of course once famously linked with a move to Liverpool after Rafael Benitez decided that Barry would be a better option than Xabi Alonso – a suggestion that was met with some ridicule – yet now the player seems to be in demand once again.
After Wenger was told that Bayer Leverkusen’s Lars Bender was not for sale – or that he would cost the world even if he was – the manager has since turned his attentions elsewhere.
Are Arsenal really after Gareth Barry’s signature this summer? Could he do a job for the Gunners in defensive midfield? Let us know your thoughts below.
