It’s been hard not to be impressed by Southampton this season.
Playing attractive, free-flowing football, Mauricio Pochettino’s team have leaped into third place following yesterday’s 4-1 victory over Hull City.
Here in the Football Transfer Tavern they are quickly becoming many punters’ second favourite team.
Given this stunning start to the season it always wasn’t going to be long before their best players were linked with transfers away.
Today Matt Law from Mirror Football arrives in the tavern to reveal that Liverpool and Arsenal are keeping tabs on Saints striker Jay Rodriguez.
The former Burnley forward has netted four times for the Saints this season and has generally been excellent playing in a support striker role.
This has seen his rewarded with his first senior England call up, joining up with Southampton team-mates Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert in the national team set up.
Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is reportedly keen on the 24-year-old as he looks for a possible replacement for star man Luis Suarez.
The Uruguayan international, who scored twice for the Reds yesterday taking his total to seven for the season, is still being linked with a big money transfer away from Anfield.
The former Swansea City boss appears to have outlined Rodriguez, who would offer versatility in attack given his ability to play as a out and out striker or as a wide forward like he does at St. Mary’s.
Rodgers could yet face competition from Arsene Wenger, who has also highlighted a move for the new England striker as he seeks to strengthen his attacking options in January.
Rodriguez joined Southampton in a £7 million deal last summer and the Saints will be desperate to keep hold of their growing star with executive chairman Nicola Cortese eager to tie him down to a new lucrative contract at St. Mary’s to warn off suitors.
Will Southampton even consider selling Jay Rod in the near future? Let us know your thoughts below.
