There were a few relieved Arsenal supporters in the Football Transfer Tavern last night as their side clung onto a place in the Champions League knockout stages despite a 2-0 defeat at Napoli.
After enduring a tense last few minutes, the Gunners were celebrating their passage into the next round albeit in second place.
This relatively good mood has been continued in the tavern this morning as reports emerge about a long-term transfer target possibly considering a move to the Emirates Stadium.
The Express report that Arsenal and Liverpool target Clement Grenier has put both sides on red alert by admitting he was unsure if his future remains with Lyon.
The 22-year-old French international has been regarded as one of Arsene Wenger’s prime targets for the last few seasons while Brendan Rodgers is also thought to be fan of the Ligue 1 star.
Now Grenier, whose contract at the Stade Gerland expires in 2016, has revealed that he will consider his options despite being happy with Lyon.
“Arsenal and Liverpool? There was contact. After that, it remains personal,” he said.
“I am in Lyon, I’m glad to be here for the rest of the season and we will see later.
“My goal is to be as efficient as possible with Lyon, to fulfill the objectives of the club as well as my personal goals.
“For now, I’m focused on Lyon.”
As the landlord kindly reminds us, the Gunners reportedly saw a £8 million offer rejected by Lyon during the summer but that hasn’t put off the French boss and this latest revelation could cause him to revive in his interest in the French star as he tries to boost his table topping side.
