Arsenal already have Bacary Sagna to deal with wing bombardments, but the man Arsene Wenger is reportedly targeting will be much more than just cover for the pasta-haired Frenchman.
Gregory van der Wiel has evidently got what it takes to become a legend, with the 22-year old already a fully fledged, stalwart international whose contributions helped Holland reach the World Cup final.
The fact that he was schooled at (and made it through) Ajax’s famous youth academy would seemingly be enough to shout home about, but he has also been awarded the Johan Cruyff Player of the Year Award 2010, on account of his steely resolve, tough no-nonsense tackling, and good pace leading to the creation of chances.
It is obvious that as far as defence is concerned, Arsenal need to go back to the drawing board, or at least bite the bullet and admit that some new blood is needed. The Gunners need to move fast before more decorated suitors turn up or Ajax increase the asking price.
To make matters worse, reigning champions Chelsea (who made a show of Arsenal in last week’s London derby) are also said to be interested, with rumours of Bratislav Ivanovic heading out of Stamford Bridge.
