Interested faces fill the Football Transfer Tavern this afternoon as Metro suggest that Arsenal have made an enquiry to Ajax about the future of centre back Toby Alderweireld.
Arsene Wenger’s side look light at the back and right back Bacary Sagna covered in central defence for the suspended Laurent Koscielny during Saturday’s impressive 3-1 away win over Fulham.
The French boss could now move for the 24-year-old Belgian international as he searches for a permanent solution ahead of big season at the Emirates Stadium.
Reports from the Netherlands indicate that Arsenal are looking at a possible deal for the defender who only has one year left on his contract at the Amsterdam Areana and is valued at around £6.5 million.
A host of Premier League sides have been tracking Alderweireld this summer and the centre back has already rejected a chance to move to the Premier League with Norwich City but the Gunners are the latest club to show interest after Ajax knocked back a bid for La Liga side Atletico Madrid.
Former Arsenal player and current director of football at the Dutch club, Marc Overmars, said: “We were contacted this weekend but it was not considered sufficient for a player of the national team of Belgium.”
When quizzed over potential interest from his former club, Overmars added: “They would need to pay the asking price, if we were to let one of our players go.”
If Alderweireld were to join up with Arsene Wenger side he’d have to chance to play alongside Belgian team-mate and former Ajax captain Thomas Vermaelen who is sitting out the first month of the season with injury.
Will Arsenal reunite Alderweireld with Vermaelen at the Emirates Stadium? Let us know your thoughts below.
