The Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern were pretty delighted with their side’s January window. They managed to bring in a number of players, notably Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and it’s looking set to be quite the second-half of the season – with a lot on the line for the Gunners.
That being said, though, despite the focus that is needed on the current campaign, it makes sense for Arsenal to plan ahead, and according to the Evening Standard, that’s exactly what they are planning to do.
James Olley of the Evening Standard has recently reported that Arsenal plan to scout a number of goalkeepers between now and the end of the season amid growing uncertainty surrounding both David Ospina and Petr Cech.
In the case of the latter, Cech’s recent form has been mixed at best lately, and it’s fair to say that the goalkeeper is far from the form that he enjoyed at Chelsea for the best part of a decade.
Significantly, Jan Oblak is noted as a potential target for the Gunners, though quite rightly, the significance of a top-four finish for Arsenal in any potential deal for a player of his calibre is also reasserted.
In more ways than one, then, the next few months are going to be key for Arsenal. They need to try their best to secure a top-four finish, and if they can do that, then they’ll stand a decent chance of landing some of their targets – with a goalkeeper clearly a priority.
It will be tough to see Petr Cech out of the first team, but his form this term has been poor. Likewise, David Ospina has done little to showcase his quality in recent years.
Oblak would be a great replacement, but it would take quite the finish to the season for Arsenal to have a strong chance of landing him.
They secured the signing of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, though, so anything is possible.
