There is drama here in the Football Transfer Tavern this afternoon after Stoke City goalkeeper Asmir Begovic denied reports that he is set to leave the Britannia Stadium for a big-money move to Arsenal or Manchester United.
Hannah Duncan from Metro indicates that the Bosnian shot stopper has been subject to interest from top four clubs after some standout displays for the Potters this term.
Despite admitting he is ‘flattered’ by the reports, the former Portsmouth goalkeeper insists that he wants to stay with the Midlands club to help secure some silverware for Tony Pulis’ side.
“All the speculation is flattering and nice, but I am focused on my job here,” he said.
“As long as Stoke want me, I am contracted. I know football is a business and we will see what happens. You never know what is around the corner, but as far as I am concerned I am planning to be here.
“I am happy here and I am desperate to help the club push forward. We all want to win trophies and be as successful as we can, that is the main aim.
“I do have ambitions to play at the highest level and test myself if the opportunity arises. I can’t think too much ahead. I am just thinking about here. I am contracted and there’s nothing more I can say.”
The news is a blow to United and Arsenal who are both on the lookout for a new keeper in the summer and the pair had outlined Begovic as a possible solution.
Will Stoke hang on to Begovic even though they’ve signed Jack Butland? Let us know your thoughts below.
