They rarely see eye to eye but Arsenal and Manchester United fans in the Football Transfer Tavern can at least agree upon one thing; that both sides could do with some further defensive reinforcements this summer.
That said, one defender who doesn’t look like arriving at either Emirates Stadium or Old Trafford this summer is Hector Moreno according to reports from The Express today.
The Espanyol centre back has been a long-term target of both the Gunners and Red Devils, and highly rated following a successful spell in La Liga, Serie A champions Juventus are set to formalise their interest in the Mexican international.
It could be a case of you snooze, you lose for both Arsene Wenger and Louis van Gaal with Espanyol set to ask for just £6 million for Moreno’s services while his agent Eduardo Hernandez said in no uncertain terms: “Moreno is leaving Espanyol. He wants to leave and we’re looking for another team in Europe.”
With the asking price so modest, it is Manchester United fans especially that are questioning why their club isn’t snapping up the man who appeared at the World Cup for such little outlay.
On the other hand, it is at this point that some of our other Red Devils supporters pipe up and claim that they want Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels and nobody else.
While Arsenal brought Villarreal’s Gabriel Paulista into the club during January, our resident Gooners aren’t so sure that Per Mertesacker has too long left in him at the top level and would welcome another centre back arrival.
