Arsenal & Manchester United go head-to-head for Dutchman

vlaar.jpgManchester United and Arsenal fans bring a tense atmosphere to the Football Transfer Tavern as both sides go head-to-head in the race to sign Holland’s defensive rock.

According to The Express, the deep rivalry will be stretched into the January transfer window as both sides are desperate to sign Ron Vlaar.

Aston Villa are believed to have no other choice but to cash in on their captain as he will become a free agent at the end of the season and he still has not held talks with the club over an extension.

United fans have picked up a lot of stick by the bar recently for their shoddy defending this season and a lot of those mistakes have gone down to a lack of experience.

Their desperate need for a defensive reinforcements is partially down to the club losing Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic to QPR and Inter Milan.

The Red Devils have drafted in Marcos Rojo but they still look thin at the back with Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans having all suffered from injuries so far this season.

This has led to their academy graduate Tyler Blackett stepping into the back line, who has been a scapegoat this season for some of their horror shows at the back.

However, Arsenal are equally keen to capture Vlaar’s signature after being exposed in games against the top sides in the Premier League and Champions League.

And with Calum Chambers stepping in at right back for the injured Mathieu Debuchy, it leaves the Gunners with only Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker available at centre back.

One of our regular Gooners notes that ‘half a job’ Arsene Wenger still hasn’t replaced Thomas Vermaelen, meaning he will be looking to capitalise on Vlaar’s situation.

Manchester United fans. Is the January signature of Vlaar an absolute necessity in the New Year? Let us know your thoughts below.
